In anticipation of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s upcoming Costume Institute exhibit ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’, it’s time to break out the deconstructed tees, frayed jeans, graffiti print, and heavy hardware for the ‘anti-fashion’ fashion statement.
While the original DIY punk aesthetic originated from actually ‘doing it yourself’ the style subculture has evolved, gaining influence on contemporary haute couture and ready-to-wear. It is this influence on current collections by designers including Karl Lagerfeld, Rodarte, and Helmut Lang that has made for a high fashion form of rebellion.
